“There is one day that is ours. Thanksgiving Day is the one day that is purely American.”
- O. Henry

Hi everybody, Eric here!
Happy Thanksgiving! Yes, that O. Henry quote sums it up for me… we have a lot to be thankful for this year, and I wanted to take a minute to personally tell you and all the "News To Me" viewers thanks for making a guy’s dream come true by watching and supporting the show.
I want to list a few people and things I am specifically thankful for (in no order), and you feel free to join in with your comments at the end of this blog…
1. My friends
2. Soldiers serving and those who have served…take a moment and thank them this week.
3. My co-workers…yes, they need to be thanked, they try hard to make me look good.
4. J.B. – the man who made me…. thanks Josh.
5. Dana Carvey and Garth Brooks…. thanks.
6. Nicole Lapin, a talented person.
7. Mike, Aaron, Charles, Grayson, Corey.
8. Thanks Teague.
9. Thanks DH.

12. Trout, because I love to catch em…

23. Golf courses, because I love to play the game.
24. Non-profits, good work you are doing…
25. Al Gore, for the Internet — it keeps me out of the malls.
26. Believe it or not, the stock market, kept my wallet full this year, thanks…
And last but not least:
27. My family. Thanksgiving has had some wonderful memories, but also some very weird, weird times in the Lanford household… mostly involving me and my brother and the law… (please don’t hold this against me, just keeping it real)… no need for details… suffice it to say that my poor parents… they did raise us right, we just put ourselves in some weird situations. This year… let’s hope no jail time for us… just good times and great company.
Now, you have a great one tomorrow and whatever you are thankful for, make it known.
Eric

Army suicide rate is climbing rapidly
I saw this the other night and thought it useful to repost it so that more can understand the magnitude of the problem. The article is titled "Army suicide rate could top nation's this year", and it appears on the CNN website. Essentially, conditions in the American military are so bad right now for soldiers, mental health-wise (as a consequence of post-traumatic stress (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), the fatiguing effect of multiple repeated tours of duty, financ

Psychologists decide it is never ethical to assist torture
American psychologists work in a lot of settings, and one of them is in the military. As part of their role in the military, some psychologists have been asked in recent years to participate in the interrogations of prisoners. And some of those interrogations have involved interventions which a non-doublespeaking person would call torture. I don't believe that these military psychologists were actually involved in doing the work of the torture process, but they were involved in aiding that p

Inside Kate's circus train compartment.
Our feature story this week started with an unremarkable photo uploaded to iReport.com about “living in small spaces”. Kate Meinhardt sent in a picture of her tiny, cramped room aboard a circus railway car. It wasn’t the photo that caught my attention so much as it was the idea of living in a glorified shoebox while riding the rails with a circus. A few more mouse clicks and I stumbled on Kate’s big top blog. I dialed her up and got the rest of the story.
Fresh out of college and frustrated with a fruitless job, Kate threw caution to the wind and ran off with the Ringling Brothers. Yes, it was a once in a lifetime adventure, but Kate had her eyes on a bigger prize: career advancement. Her gig with the circus opened the door to her current job as a Zookeeper. However, that success came at a price. Kate suffered a terrible, life-changing injury during her circus stint; but it ultimately made her a stronger person and her attitude and optimism amazed us all.
We were lucky to stumble across Kate’s story, and it serves as a good reminder that every person you meet, every stranger you see in the street, on the subway, at the store, in church, has a story worth telling. What’s yours? We’d love to hear it.

Press "D" for Depression Therapy
A new study published in this month's issue of the journal Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice suggests that phone therapy for depression may be an effective alternative to traditional face-to-face psychotherapy The current study was a meta-analysis, which is basically a scientific procedure where the results of several different studies are collapsed into one statistical analysis. Researchers use meta-analysis procedures to compare data across several different research projects

Pursue a New You Through True Self Value
One of the most important questions in personal growth is how does a person develop self-value? So many people are left with scars from their childhood from how little value they have. More scars develop as people get older and experience more pain. Some people end up with the beliefs that they only have value if they are a good parent, provider, employee, etc. The common thread is that a person’s value either doesn't exist or exists outside of them. When your value is external, what

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation device for treatment-resistant Major Depression just approved by the FDA
According to a press release dated October 8, 2008, the FDA has cleared a Pennsylvania company, Neuronetics, Inc. to sell its NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation system for use as a treatment for treatment-resistant Major Depression. This is, to my knowledge, the first time that this technology has been available for use by regular psychiatrists for use in treating regular depressed patients. This is potentially a great thing for patients suffering with severe depressions that aren'
