BigSound Live 2011 - Rave review

Wed 7 Sep – BIGSOUND 2011

Rave also got me to review a few bands.

Wed Sep 7

At Birdee Num Num, young Sydney shoegazers The Laurels keep the upstairs room – renamed The Aviary for the event’s duration – mesmerised by waves of distortion and pulsing drone. Already impressive when they opened for US psych-rock shamen The Black Angels in June, the four-piece mark an early highlight.

Recently reduced to a four-piece, West End boys Laneous & The Family Yah sound more ‘Gurge-y than ever at The Zoo, mixing kicking dance-rock beats and soupy keyboards. Never your average jeans-and-a-T-shirt frontman, Mr Laneous sports a striking pink hairdo and plays decent choppy guitar – one could almost say “Quan-tastic”.

One of tonight’s ‘must-see’ acts, the hotly-hyped Stonefield rock the packed-to-the-rafters Bakery Lane. Sporting matching “hippie maiden” headbands, the four impossibly young sisters (bassist Holly Findlay isn’t even 13) demonstrate serious musical talent, yet some of their cod-’70s riffs resemble Wolfmother – Andrew Stockdale, eat your heart (and ‘fro) out.

Back at The Zoo, Melbourne’s World’s End Press are busy presiding over an impromptu indie disco. Prime exponents of Australian “indie-electro”, the four-piece send funky basslines, melodic guitar fills and shimmering synths in all directions, all the while managing to beat Tim & Jean at their own game.

Staying at Black Bear, the not-exactly-hirsute Paper Scissors keep the onlookers head-nodding and booty-shaking with their slinky grooves. Sounding a lot jazzier than other ‘indie’ acts on the bill, they are uniformly excellent – but once the clock strikes midnight, our legs start to give out. Home time.

Thu Sep 8

Kicking off tonight’s showcase program at The Zoo, The Jungle Giants are initially fun to watch, but soon plateau despite their youthful enthusiasm. Memo to fledgling local bands: keep the "tribal" drumbeats and faux-African “highlife” guitars so beloved of ‘happy-clappy’ acts (eg Cloud Control and last night’s popular draw Jonathan Boulet) in check.

Momentum-riding Rave cover stars Ball Park Music amass tonight’s biggest crowd at Woodland. Frontman Sam Cromack is doubtless chuffed to announce the release of the sextet’s debut album Happiness And Surrounding Suburbs before making everyone bop along to buoyant staples like iFly, Sad Rude Future Dude and It’s Nice To Be Alive.

Dancehall masters Dubmarine may be less ‘current’ than BPM, yet display world-class chops and an instinctive ability to ignite the dancefloor. Fully ‘in character’ (white bodypaint, Indigenous flag shorts), the manically-swivelling MC D-Kazman grinds out one ragga after another while co-vocalist Cat Walker adds a sultry edge to the combo’s relentless groove.

Quirky indie-poppers Seals are a revelation at the under-capacity Ric’s (completely packed out earlier for Andy Bull and Oscar + Martin), making for a fantastic finish to the BigSound Live program. Multi-tasking ringleader Euan handles guitar, bass and vocals with equal aplomb and keyboardist Dimity maintains her cool sans shoes.

Marionette ID Release Their New Album "Alluvion" on Fluttery Records

Budapest's extraordinary band, Marionette ID release a new album. Alluvion is released by Fluttery Records.

Fluttery Records starts autumn with new Marionette ID album "Alluvion". Marionette ID is a Hungarian post-metal /post-rock / post-hardcore band founded in 2008. After expanding to a greater audience, they played several European tours in 2010 and 2011. The bands appearance on many blogs, music websites made the label curious about the band and they have signed a recording agreement with Fluttery Records.

The label started re-issuing their debut self-relase album "Emptiness Will Change Your Mind" in September 2010. The band and album received many good reviews. On a review on Sound As Language, the band received this comment "Subtle melodies are countered by moody instrumental passages and soothing vocals. Marionette ID possess an emotional weight and depth that truly set the band apart. This is post-hardcore at its most melodic and structured. Marionette ID are practicing a precision few bands dare to. If you are willing to give Emptiness Will Change Your Mind some time to grow, you will be richly rewarded." C.W.Ross said "It hard to pin down the style of music played by the band because it changes depending on what song or even what part of a song you're listening to at that particular time. You'll hear everything from Indie and modern rock to post rock, progressive and even jam band elements in the eight songs that make up 'Emptiness Will Change Your Mind' and he gave 8.25/10 to the album. Blues Bunny made the comment "An interesting album, therefore, that would have appeal for those who like melody in their rock music or for those who seek to go further than indie rock snack food."

It was 2011 when Marionette ID started recording their new album. Alluvion was recorded in Budapest from January till June, 2011. In their seven track new album, Marionette ID still try to flirt with interesting structures, heavy sounds using elements of post metal.

The album is highly recommended if you like Isis, Cult of Luna, Neurosis, Pelican, Russian Circles, Rosetta, Jesu, Tides From Nebula, Alcest, Mogwai, A Day To Remember, Alexisonfire, Enter Shikari, Escape The Fate, Thrice, Fugazi, post-metal, post-rock.

Fluttery Records is an independent record label focusing on Post-rock, Ambient, Experimental, Electronic, Modern Classical music. The album is available on major music download stores like Itunes, Bandcamp, AmazonMP3, Napster and eMusic. The CD can be purchased from the Fluttery Records website. Also, all label releases can be streamed free on the label website.
