Bored~ ranting
Having fun is the last thing that pops up when I’m alone now. All I can think about is eating, talking to people on the internet, etc. now it's escalated to a journal entry. I guess I am just trying to find my own way to buy away the time, for what though? What the hell am I trying to race my life through? I feel like I'm wasting so much time that a could be doing something I love, like being with someone I love or just having a good time laughing with friends enjoying life itself. None of that happens to me much anymore, I’m almost lost interest in my family for their reasons of fighting over all the small things that should not matter in a normal person’s life. Say if I were ever to get married do I want to have fights every other week with the person I choose to spend the rest of my life with? What the fuck are people thinking these days rushing into marriages and relationships just because they are lonesome? It fucks things up and you don’t have many chances, I’m sorry to say, in this short life of ours. I feel like my writing is very dismal, but that’s exactly how I feel… depressed. Ha-ha, I HATE being alone, it's absolutely disheartening. But, then again it's my choice, because I choose to stay home over going out. This deeply confounds me in many ways. On the bright side of going out, you will get to see many people in your life and this is a plus because you will be able to live your life to the fullest… The most you can get out of life you have to grasp whenever you have the chances because you only have one chance the majority of the time. I find myself to be a pessimist at this point in my life, because I look at everything at having an end. This is a very melancholy thing for me to be thinking of especially at the age of 16, but how much will it matter if I complain about these things 10, 20, 50 years from now. Like what’s the point of doing this and that when it’ll all be over soon enough, the answer simply… don’t waste your valuable time of life, spend it laughing and enjoying it! With this I finally understand why humans can’t understand infinity, because nothing we know, in no doubts, has ever lasted for infinity EXCEPT for the earth itself. This also links my hatred for all the atheist bastards out there that deem in a beginning and an end… I believe there was no beginning and there is no end for the universe and we were evidently built to not understand this, why? No one knows, sadly. Oh, and the assholes who made up the bullshit about 2012 that scared the SHIT out of me as gullible adolescent, this is the true meaning of 2012 on the “Mayan” calendar-http://www.universetoday.com/2008/05/19/no-doomsday-in-2012/. There are so many more topics to discuss but for now I will end this entry on the thought- live your life to the fullest and have no regrets, because wherever you got to you have lived your life. Honestly, I don’t know why I look down on life so much, partly because mine is already pretty fucked up and I want to hold on to the past BUT it has already slipped from my grasp. This blatantly illustrates that I need help, someone that understands my position, not some asshole therapist that ‘says’ they have gone through with these problems before but doesn’t even have a clear understanding of half the shit I tell them. I don’t know what I will do, but this is a journal for my thoughts of Love, Life, Universe, State of Life (school, work, etc.), and well the assholes that fuck us over in economy, so I won’t talk about my problems unless I use connections in the future. On my next entry I will focus more on one subject, until then “adieu”.

Other Notable (insert category here) of 2008
Other Notable Albums released in 2008 (that were not in my top ten… with a few words about them; in no particular order)
1. Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
Downtempo/trip-hop fun fun fun? Makes me space out a little. Ideal when you have nothing else to do.
2. TV on the Radio - Dear Science
I have no clue why this isn't in the top ten. It's pretty awesome.
3. My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
As overrated as this band is (and this new beard-rock revival in general is), I found this album likable. Not great, but likable. It's got a great title though. Now shave, dammit!
4. The Black Keys - Attack & Release
They're great live. Not as good as Rubber Factory. A little mellower.
5. Lil' Wayne - Tha Carter III
I feel bad for not putting rap on my original list. So here's this one and…
6. Black Milk - Tronic
Also pretty good.
7. HEALTH - HEALTH//DISCO
Remixes. Fuuuun.
8. Be Your Own Pet - Get Awkward
Great album title. I'll miss this band.
9. Hot Chip - Made In The Dark
Fuckkk. I totally forgot this record. It's so dancey/fun/hilarious.
10. Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I-IV
Cool free-download concept. Cool record. And I like the album covers. (Hi Jorin!)
11. Brian Eno & David Byrne - Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
They could read out of a phone book and I'd still like it.
12. The Knux - Remind Me In Three Days
Refreshingly original 'Nawlins hip-hop. Katrina, fuck yeah!
13. Lykke Li - Youth Novels
Swedish and so sweet you'll get a toothache.
14. Beck - Modern Guilt
It was okay. But it's Beck and I love him. And Dangermouse. And I love him too.
15. M83 - Saturday=Youth
Perfect for gazing at the shoes of your choice.
OTHER NOTABLE MOVIES (also in no order)
1. Doubt
Great acting. I'm surprised whoever played Mrs. Miller didn't get some sort of Golden Globe nomination.
2. Frost/Nixon
I'm not usually one for political films, but this one was well done. Good acting, great buildup, and even a little comic relief via some Italian shoes and Kevin Bacon being… Kevin Bacon. For some reason, everything that man does seems like a joke to me.
3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Okay, so it was too long. And Cate Blanchett made me want to slam my head in a car door. But other that that, I'm good. Brad Pitt was interesting to watch.
PERSONAL BEST MOMENTS:
1. This dinner conversation:
Mother: *Blabs on about work*
Dad (angrily): Sherry, what is wrong with you tonight?
Me: Oh, Dad. She's just being Miley. *Uncontrollable laughter*
2. Getting existential with Morgan (basically a crazy-high night with my friend that ended in a conversation involving Rene Descartes and Spongebob)
3. Austin City Limits
A favorite part? Oh… I don't remember.
4. South By Southwest
A favorite part? Being stage-dived on (and subsequently crushed) by Thurston Moore. *dies*
OTHER SUPER-CATCHY SONGS
1. Miley Cyrus - See You Again
Is it bad that I know all the words to this? Or that I thought it was Ashlee Simpson for a while?
2. M.I.A. - Paper Planes
This one made a serious comeback. Who knew Clash samples could hit the top 40? Not Joe Strummer, who I'm sure is rolling over in his grave.
3. Lil' Wayne - Lollipop
That came out this year, right?

Favorite albums of 2008
The title above is perhaps misleading. I've never felt qualified to create a proper "best of (year)" list since I have habitually learned what albums to check out next based on other people's best-of lists, leaving me typically about one year behind everyone on the music-loving internet in my listening habits.
Take as an example of this: one of my favorite albums these days is Boxer by The National, a fantastic album that made a lot of best-of-year lists in–you guessed it–2007. As other peoples' best-of-2008 lists have been coming out, I've been getting into some great artists (Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Shearwater) that put out albums earlier this year that I simply hadn't heard about.
This realization got me thinking. In all the hype about the best albums of a given year, not much effort seems to go into looking back at the albums of previous years to see how much staying power the so-called "best" wound up having. So, you went crazy about, say, Mirrored by Battles or In Rainbows by Radiohead, for example–did you keep listening to them? When was the last time you listened to them?
If you're like me, "newness" is half the fun of music listening and collecting. I'll go nuts for an album, listen to it a lot, then stop entirely because either A) I got sick of it, or B) I found something new to go nuts over. The result is there are some artists/albums that I used to listen to constantly, but don't listen to at all anymore (*cough* Arcade Fire).
So what are those albums that have staying power? What album do I keep coming back to, no matter what year it came out? Instead of listing the best albums to come out this year, how about listing the albums I listened to the most this year? A list like that would almost seem to have more value. Although the year cut-off isn't fair to recent releases that may be fantastic, that buffering bit of arbitrary-ness is necessary I think to really gauge an album's staying power.
So here are my most-listened albums of 2008.
(OK, so technically this is actually a list of albums containing songs that played the most often in the past 12 months. But, in the iTunes age, such is to be expected I think. The result is no less valid to me.)
RANK / ALBUM / ARTIST / RELEASE DATE
1. Fingers Crossed - Architecture in Helsinki, Apr 6, 2004
I got into Architecture in Helsinki in a major way this year. I saw them at the High Noon Saloon in Madison in October, 2007 and fell in love. It was one of those magical shows where you're only barely familiar with the band's music going in and come out a complete convert who buys ALL of their music. This album was their debut and is their most calm and pretty-sounding. I'm a little surprised to see it at the top, given its overall lack of stand-out songs, but the more I think about it, the more I realize it really belongs there, because the album just begs to be listened to from start to finish. A call I answer frequently.
2. In Case We Die - Architecture in Helsinki, Mar 22, 2005
Their weirdest album, and probably their least accessible, but totally rockin' if you love their sound. This band makes "indie pop rock" that definitely does not deserve the title, because while the songs are infitiely "listenable" (like beer is "drinkable") the pace and structure reflect the short attention span and hyperactivity of the culture (i.e. youth) they represent.
3. Boxer - The National, May 22, 2007
Oh man. Yes! I'm so glad this made it on here. And so close to the top. For sure check this album out if you haven't yet. It took a while to grow on me, since I don't typically go in for the slower piano-y songs, but it quickly became one of my favorites once it did (grow on me).
4. Flight of the Conchords - Flight of the Conchords, Apr 22, 2008
In many ways, 2008 was the year of Flight of the Conchords for me. I caught a couple episodes of the HBO show by accident and they took me completely by surprise. I remember saying something like, "I can't believe hipsters are a large enough demographic to warrant their own sitcom!" Clearly they are. I now have the DVD set of the first season, their first EP, a compilation of songs ripped from the show that I downloaded, and this self-titled full-length album, which was rerecorded in a studio. It's a comedy CD, yes, but it's also a collection of great songs from an immensely talented duo that seem to be able to emulate (and parody) any musical style they set their minds to.
4. Places Like This - Architecture in Helsinki, Aug 21, 2007
Ok, something else to say about this band… This is their most recent album, and while they played most of the songs from it at the show, and it was the first album of theirs that I got into, I guess I just listen to it less than their earlier work. There's no good reason for that that I can think of.
6. Dear Science - TV on the Radio, Sep 23, 2008
Don't you love it when you anticipate an album until you just can't stand it, then it comes out and it's fucking fantastic? This was the case with TVOTR's third full-length. I got into this band two years ago when I first heard Ambulance off their first album Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes. That album was a favorite. Then Return to Cookie Mountain came out, and that was a huge favorite. So, given my Icarus-like ascent into massive fanboydom with regard to this band, I really expected to be somewhat burned by their latest album. But no. It's really, really good. It's their most accessible album yet, which is neat, since it turns out they're good at dancey songs in addition to moody Trip-hop-influenced arty stuff. I can't wait to see them live again, and I can't wait to see what they come up with on their next album.
7. Random Spirit Lover - Sunset Rubdown, Oct 9, 2007
The subject of expectations plays out with this band as well, but in a different way. Sunset Rubdown is a side-project of one of the songwriters from another favorite band, Wolf Parade (note their album in the below position, too). Unlike TVOTR, however, Wolf Parade did not ultimately deliver on my excitement for their most recent album, At Mount Zoomer. So while I'm obviously still a huge fan–since the musicians are featured twice in this list–neither album on this list is their most recent offering, and I'll wager the same will be true of next year's list. Anyway, I got into Sunset Rubdown because I was head-over-heels for Wolf Parade and wanted more. Sunset Rubdown's earlier stuff is a bit of an acquired taste, but Random Spirit Lover is an excellent blend of great songwriting and instrumentation, and as an album it flows together so nicely, I just love listening to it all the way through. If you don't know Wolf Parade's work though, I'd advise starting there before checking this band out.
8. Apologies to the Queen Mary - Wolf Parade, Sep 27, 2005
I'm amused to see this on this list. My disappointment in At Mount Zoomer ultimately drove me to listening to this album again, after I had put it down somewhere in 2007. I even wrote a blog post early in 2006 about how resilient this album is to the boredom factor; glad to see it's still carrying its weight. This is such a pleasing album. Buy it.
8. Made In The Dark - Hot Chip, Feb 4, 2008
I'm shocked to see this one on here, but pleasantly so. See, I only heard of Hot Chip for the first time last month! I was in a store, heard a song, asked the clerk who it was, and then checked them out. It's a testament to how quickly I latched on to this band that they made it to the top ten most-listened list in time. I've always been a bit of a sucker for music with a good dance beat, but so-called "dance music" is so often boring and the songs are always way too long (I'm looking at you, Daft Punk). So this band is the best of both worlds for me: dance music with plenty of indie rock credentials and a mindful eye on the clock.
10. Distortion - The Magnetic Fields, Jan 15, 2008
This entry I don't get. I don't actually consider myself a big fan of this album, although I LOVE Magnetic Fields. I suppose it probably made the list because it came out so early in the year, giving me lots of time to try it out. Problem is, it isn't all that good; certainly not compared to the band's magnificent earlier works: 69 Love Songs and, my favorite, Holiday. I don't even think I've listened to this one all the way through more than once. Maybe iTunes Genius threw off the count on this one a bit, too.
